This Day In History, 1903


Near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Orville and Wilbur Wright make the first successful flight in history of a self-propelled, heavier-than-air aircraft. Orville piloted the gasoline-powered, propeller-driven biplane, which stayed aloft for 12 seconds and covered 120 feet on its inaugural flight.

People always note the 100th anniversary of something, but what about the 101st?

I recall watching the news last year on this day; they tried to recreate the flight and failed, primarily due to rain.

On November 21, 2003, gnomi and I were in Washington DC, and we went to the Air and Space Museum. They had an exhibit devoted to the Wright Brothers and the first flight; it was quite impressive.
